What is a ventilator circuit?
Ventilator circuits are a crucial component of both invasive and non-invasive ventilation (NIV). They work together with breathing interfaces such as NIV masks or tracheostomy tubes to aid machine-assisted breathing for patients with respiratory failure, safely delivering oxygen to the lungs.
Homecare NIV setups generally feature a non-vented mask and a passive vent circuit with an exhalation port. Homecare setups for invasive ventilation generally feature an active vent circuit that connects to a tracheostomy tube, in a single-limb configuration with an exhalation valve, or in a dual-limb configuration that includes separate inhalation and exhalation tubes. Heated vent circuits are available for setups that incorporate a humidifier. Quality vent circuits are essential to help patients continue breathing while avoiding invasive intubation.
